Q: What is Woodcut Printmaking?
A: Woodcut is a traditional relief process that can be used to print a two dimensional image created on a flat wooden surface onto another flat surface.  It was first practiced in China over a thousand years ago, and became established in Europe in the 15th century with the local development of paper.  A design is created on the wooden surface.  Whatever is not intended to be part of the reproduced design is carved away from the surface using steel gouges with a variety of blade shapes.  Ink is applied to the remaining flat surface areas, and pressure can be used to transfer the inked design to paper.  That design can be realistic images or pure decorative design, or anything in between- it's all up to the vision of the artist.
